Vagal nerve stimulation for refractory epilepsy: a brief review
نویسندگان
چکیده
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an effective adjunctive treatment for patients with drugresistance epilepsy. Short and long-term VNS studies demonstrate a seizure-suppressing effect, with a more efficacy in long-term treatment. Precise mechanisms of VNS in attenuating seizure are not fully understood. Clarification of VNS mechanisms of action may improve its clinical efficacy, as it may provide strategies for the development of new therapeutic candidates for patients with refractory epilepsy. It also might be beneficial for identification of optimal stimulation parameters. In this review article, we present some possible mechanisms involved in anti-epileptic effects of VNS.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Medically Refractory Epilepsy in Children with Brain Malformations
Vagal nerve stimulation is approved for medically refractory partial epilepsy in children older than 12 years of age. However, it has been shown in the literature that vagal nerve stimulation is also quite efficacious in children younger than 12 with generalized epilepsy and brain malformations. We report a case series of children younger than 12 who responded well to vagal nerve stimulation. A...

Vagal nerve stimulation can decrease the number of seizure episodes. In 1997, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the first implantable stimulation device for the treatment of medicall...

The vagus nerve (VN), the longest cranial nerve and an essential part of the parasympathetic system, connects the central nervous system to respiratory, cardiovascular, immune, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems and is involved in the maintenance of homeostasis by controlling these systems. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is related to any method that would stimulate the vagal nerve via elec...

OBJECT The authors conducted a study to evaluate the published results of vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) for medically refractory seizures according to evidence-based criteria. METHODS The authors performed a review of available literature published between 1980 and 2010. Inclusion criteria for articles included more than 10 patients evaluated, average follow-up of 1 or more years, inclusion o...
